Major depressive disorder is a mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities. Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. Current research suggests that depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. . If you have been experiencing some of the following signs and symptoms most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, you may be suffering from depression.
- Persistent sad mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness or worthlessness
- Irritability
- Feelings of guilt
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
- Isolating
- Decreased energy or fatigue
- Moving or talking more slowly
- Feeling restless or having trouble sitting still
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Decreased appetite or increased appetite, weight loss
- Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
Treatment of Depression
